Feeding the birds

Feeding birds might seem like a strange activity for learning. But children learn a lot about things from feeding birds. We went to feed birds today and here are a few things we learned:

1. Birds aren’t people.
2. Birds don’t always want to eat when you want them too.
3. Birds fly.
4. Muddy hills are slippery.
We also practiced a few skills:
1. Throwing (the bread into the water).
2. Running (getting from the car to the water).
3. Outside voices (yelling at the birds to come eat the bread).
4. Caring for animals (we only throw bread, nothing else).
Playing with animals, even feeding birds, can teach a toddler a lot about the world around them and help them learn to appreciate the environment and animals.
